  • Acquired Ken Gall’s former lab as a physical location

  • Students clear out Gall’s lab and begin plans for the facility
  • Lots of excitement – little funding (< 10 students)

Summer 2016

  • Win Tech Fee Funds for Benchtop SEM

Fall 2016

  • Major “renovation” of space to make it “a student-owned space”
  • Acquired SEM and 5 multi-material 3D printers

Spring 2017

  • A practical opening of space to users
  • The MILL’s staff grows to 20+ members (4 hrs/day; 4 days/wk)

Summer 2017

  • Acquire LOTS more equipment: FTIR, UV/Vis, Mechanical Tester, XRD, XRF, electrical measurement, furnaces, polymer extruder…
  • Win Tech Fee for “High End” 30 N to 30 kN Universal Testing System

Fall 2017

  • Learning & Discovery (L&D) Teams – student-driven research teams: Consumer Products, Science of Art, & Cold Sintering
  • The first semester of full staffing – staff grows to 40+ students

Spring 2018

  • Expanded executive council – including a Chief Operating Officer, and setting sights to add more exec members in the Fall
  • Preparing projects for the MILL fellows to complete over Summer 2018
  • Successful completion of the MILL’s first L&D Poster Competition with 3 student teams

Summer 2018

  • 4 MILL Summer Fellows staffing the MILL 40 hours/week
  • Expanding the MILL into the Undergraduate Lab
  • Institutionalization of Knowledge – Training documents/videos/certification exams
  • Dramatically expanding Safety Procedures and documentation in the MILL
  • Beginning High Entropy Alloy project and establishing the framework for additional MILL sponsored project
  • Acquiring new equipment and having it set for the Fall 2018 semester

Fall 2018

  • Beginning Materials outreach events with the MILL’s first glass workshop for the GT public
  • Launch of MILL reservation system to address increased demand for equipment
  • Acquiring new equipment – The profilometer, XRD, vacuum former, and granulator

Spring 2019

  • Expansion – Acquisition of Love 175 and 157 for use as a meeting room and additional space for our equipment teams
  • Acquiring new equipment – Differential scanning calorimeter
